France in Fashion ~ Parasol Meets Umbrulla

Rumor is that in Paris the French do not approve of umbrellas. However, research shows this was not always the case. I present to you a collection of images proving that, at one time, the French loved the umbrella and the parasol...

Georges Seurat ~ A Sunday on La Grande Jatte 1884 (PD wiki)

Alfred Stevens ~ La Parisienne 1880 (PD wiki)

I will be toting my umbrella in leau of a parasol, as even the French are not allowed to interfere with the state of my hair. The weather is scheduled to be most unpredictable in May, so for Gail a brolly is a must. I know, so British of me. Yes, you read that right, I'll be packing an umbrella not parasol. Gasp! I really can't travel around France for three weeks with a parasol, not even my cute folding one.

So yes, you guessed it, Fashionable Reader, I fly to France tomorrow. Don't you worry, I know how to schedule posts here on blogspot so you'll have regular drops of Then & Nows and even a few others while I am away.

5 Fashionable Things Gail Learned at Nova Albion

1. Yes the Rack has grown...again
2. Long necklaces can tarnish clothes at the neckline where they brush
3. Corset laces thin out to the point where, even if they aren't broken, they need to be replaced
4. Ice water gets soy cause out of satin
5. Sometimes a girl just has to strut around in her underthings

This concludes steampunk month here on Reto Rack. I hope to do it again some day and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed posting the images.

I'm off to France soon, but please don't despair Fashionable Reader, plenty of posts are scheduled to come your way even though I'm larking it up with the French (ah, the magic of Blogspot). And if I don't find the time (or the internet access) to post on the road, you can expect much lovely French fashion when I return home.

Nova Albion Steampunk Convention ~ Fashionable Others

Some fashionable steampunk folk around the convention.

Amy of Brute Force Studios, Christiana modeling some of my duds

 Pretty boys.

Ben's vest very much reminded me of this one...

 The obligatory nod to Firefly.

 Phrannish and the Space Man.

The League of Steam recruits Ryvenna for a Ghost Story

Michael and John the very dapperest of the dapper.

And I am reminded of...

Nova Albion Steampunk Convention ~ Fashionable Objects

Some of the pretties spotted round and about the Nova Albion steampunk convention.

 Bumbersnoot-like pin

 Rotating Nautilus Neckalce

 Gold boots

Made me think of these shoes...

 Jitterbug shoulder rider

 Key nail art

 Octopus top hats

 Crank spinning parasol

 Big rose hat

For some reason this particular convention, perhaps because of the Steampunk in Space theme, made me think of deco. I wouldn't say there is a natural link between the two but I do wear some of my deco stuff with steampunk outfits and it seems to go well.

Gold deco brooch and earring set

 Deco hair clip

Deco pin

Deco Necklace  Christie’s Deco (similar faux diamond $50)

Deco Van Cleef & Arpels, 1926  Bonham’s

I don't know what it is about that piece but I just love it.

And I also spotted this little jobby in the fashion blogs recently. It's not steampunk, but it's very inspiring to DIY. It could be fun to salvage and old leather camera or map case and decorate it in a similar manner.
